Transport Museum, Coventry
February 2011
Coventry was one of the main centres in the country
for the manufacture of cars. motorbikes and bicycles. So it was no
surprise that the Transport Museum there featured an impressive array of
vehicles from the earliest examples through to the present day.
Coventry had a huge range of manufacturers, most now forgotten. Below
are (1,2) a 4.5 litre blown Bentley raced at Le Mans,
(3) a 1929 Lea Francis, also ex-Le Mans,
(4) 1910 Maudsley Tourer, (5) 1930 Humber Snipe and (6) 1913 Morris (Bullnose).

Magna Science Centre, Rotherham
March 2011
The steelworks building itself was the main attraction here.
It's very difficult to describe how big it is inside. The simulation of a
blast furnace was quite good. Most of the rest was for a considerably younger audience.
But worth it for the building.
Sorry no pics. It was too dark inside.

Dogdyke Pumping Station, near Tattershall
August 2011
A fascinating piece of 19thC technology. It was used to
pump water from the fens into the Witham. Now a more modern diesel pump
has taken over.
The steam engine is not used for work nowadays and is only occasionally
in-steam. This was one of those days.
Both it and the diesel were running and we got to watch. Also interesting
was the small museum next door in the old engine operator's cottage.
(1) Engine house. (2) Boiler (3) Flywheel (4) Steam piston
(5) Ladies came too. (6) Diesel pump.
